About Us

Hello friends,

I'm Fiona the founder of Acorn Kids! I am a Melbourne dweller and like many Melburnians I love my coffee. I live with my husband Jon and two children, Vienna, 13 and Luca, 8. We grow veggies, I clean often but never iron.

Why did I start Acorn?

I started Acorn after an elusive search for a lovely soft winter hat made with wool in a fun and whimsical design for my little girl.

With nothing available to suit my tastes and sensibilities, I decided to draw on my ten years of experience in the fashion industry and create my own children’s label specialising in hats, scarves and mittens.

I love creating hand-me downs.

It's so frightening that "fast" fashion is creating more than 500,000 tonnes of landfill each year in Australia alone! At Acorn we strive to create products with love and care that are made to last ~ it makes us so proud to see Acorn products worn and loved and then passed down.

I believe in ethics in business.

I am passionate about fair-trade and selling a product that has brought benefit along the whole supply chain. As part of this goal we support a women's collective in rural China who have been making our hand-knitted winter products since we started.

We are also a stockist for Pali Baskets who trade directly and ethically with village communities in Myanmar to bring their craft to the world.

For our other products, we work with kind and ethical suppliers in small family run factories in both India and China. We have visited all our suppliers and know first hand they are looking after their employees, their community and the planet.

Shop Local and Support Small.

I also passionately believe we should shop local and support other small businesses whenever possible. We work with a local Melbourne designer Jacinta Weir to create the unique prints for our summer ranges each season. We are also so blessed to have so many wonderful stores who stock Acorn, these amazing businesses all curate unique and beautiful offerings for their local communities and we are proud to work with them.

Support Charities wherever possible.

As a family we were devastated when our daughter was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, thanks to the amazing people at the RCH and a Bone Marrow Transplant she is here with us and happy and healthy again. We are proud to support many charities associated with childhood cancer including Camp Quality, Leukaemia Foundation and the RCH Good Friday Appeal. We also support St Kilda Mums and their work with children and families in need by regularly donating boxes of beautiful Acorn goodies. And this season we have created a Ukrainian fundraising hat, all our profits from the sale of the Sunflower Bucket Hat are being donated to Save the Children Ukraine, you can view this gorgeous style here.

I try to live by my personal values of...

  • Be kind to yourself and others
  • Exercise whenever possible
  • Compliment others
  • Be grateful

As a Mum I believe in...

  • Letting them get messy
  • Take them into nature whenever possible
  • Cuddle them often

Thanks for stopping by.... and I hope you enjoy your piece of Acorn.

Fiona xx
