Tips for layering little ones in winter

  • Start with a breathable base layer — merino or cotton against the skin works best as it regulates temperature without overheating.
  • Add a beanie as soon as you step outside — heat loss from the head happens fast, especially in babies and toddlers.
  • Mittens over gloves for under-5s — little fingers are much easier to get on, and mittens trap more warmth.
  • Check your child's neck and back to gauge temperature, not their hands — hands are always cooler and can be misleading.
  • Don't overdress for indoor play — layers are easy to remove when little ones warm up from running around.
